I have two cats, a boy and a girl, that are a bonded pair. They're about a year old now, and I've had them since they were 3 months old. They're still very bonded, though not as much as they used to be. They don't cuddle anymore, but they do still play with each other, groom each other occasionally, and don't like being in separate rooms for too long.
The girl is a lot more active than the boy. She wants to play a lot, but doesn't play by herself (I have lots of regular toys and interactive toys, but she only likes chasing strings or playing fetch). The boy will play whenever, but rarely comes over to "ask" me (the girl will meow at me or bring me her favorite toys or start being destructive when she wants to play. the boy just sleeps until he hears me get a toy out).
The problem is, whenever I try to play with the girl, her brother always wants to play too, but she will not play with him. If she's playing and he comes over to play too, she'll just sit and watch and won't engage. I try to take turns and play with the boy first and wear him out so he won't try to play during his sister's turn, but it usually doesn't work because he doesn't seem to truly get tired out enough to not want to play, even if he's panting. I don't really know why she doesn't want to play with him, because she's generally more dominant than he is, but he is a lot more wild when I play with him, so maybe she doesn't like how he plays? (he's a gray boy, so he's not the brightest. She's a lot more intelligent)
I live in my granddad's basement, and so I can't really put them in separate rooms to play with the girl alone. I could put the boy in his carrier, but I feel bad doing that because he doesn't like it.
Does anybody have any tips on getting one cat to play with another? I would love to be able to play with them both at the same time.
