So, I am going to be a sophomore in college and am going to have a single room to myself. I have mental health issues and want an animal to help cope. I currently have three pets that I'm going to take with me to my dorm. They are a betta fish, African dwarf frog, and a nitrate snail. They are all allowed in my dorm. I love them dearly, but I really want an animal that I can hold. Originally, I put off the idea of getting a a Syrian hamster because it would be irresponsible and cruel if I wouldn't be able to give them the best possible life. However, since I dont have a roommate, no one else would be affected by them. My dorm is pretty big and I could fit a decent size cage and since classes are online, I could spend a large amount of time with them. I also intend to let them free roam with proofing up the room first. With covid, I also highly doubt that there will be room checks and if there is, I can fit the cage under my bed. My question really is what is the estimated care and cost of a Syrian hamster? And would I be cruel to get one in the dorm? When I get an animal, I accept responsibility for it. When I got my betta, I made sure to get a five gallon tank for him since he deserved to live comfortably. If I get a hamster, I want the best for him.
