My mom's cat is the one in question. She is 9 years old, and is in near perfect health. She has had a lump on one of her back toes for a couple months. Vet said it needed to come off for biopsy - and the entire toe would have to based on the lump.
She went in today. They amputated the toe, she had some dental stuff done and she is awake and all went well.
...Except she won't stop thrashing. She had her pain killers which helped a bit. Not a lot. She is screaming and we have been physically restraining her/pinning her down for the past 2.5 hours. She keeps trying to thrash and bite her foot. If we lose grip on her she will flip and flop over, throwing her foot into things and landing on her back. Or her head. Or her injured foot. Or whatever. She doesn't even care. She is wide eyed and warm to the touch. She did get an e-collar but that makes it worse. She can't seem to handle it. It's violent thrashing and self-biting. Luckily her biting of us isn't terrible. We definitely can't follow the put her in a dark quiet room advice.
Something to note is that she has Hyperesthesia Syndrome or something similar to it. She is every kind of weird about touch. They gave her gabapentin before she left because she was thrashing in her crate an extraordinary amount. She's had her painkillers.
We called the E-Vet and they said if we bring her in they will likely try to find another method of sedation, but it's also a 30 minute car ride there.
My mom is crying. I want to cry. My mom is regretting this procedure and is vaguely considering the possibility of euthanasia - because the cat can't seem to handle this. My mom is getting exhausted already from pinning her.
Any advice is appreciated. We are desperate.
