So I got my sister a hamster as a gift a few years ago. I used to have one that I shared custody with my now ex-girlfriend and my sister would take care of it while I was away at college since the dorms didn’t allow pets until my ex took it home one summer and accidentally killed it. My sister was devastated since she had cared for and loved that hamster. I took her to the pet store and got her a new one and she took great care of it. He was thriving. It’s been over 2 and a half years now and my sister went off to college last fall. The hamster was looking very old and a bit sickly before she left and we thought he would die shortly after but this thing is still alive. I just saw him today for the first time in a few months and he is a walking zombie. I almost puked just from seeing him. He has no fur on his legs and stomach, he is covered in tumors and open wounds, and he looks likes he’s blind. He is acting normal but he must be suffering. I want to just go outside and release him but I would feel bad. Is there a more humane way to put him down or should I just leave him to die on his own?
