Contemplating whether I should put my disabled Chihuahua to sleep.

Hi r/Pets community,

I’m really stuck on what to do and it breaks my heart even contemplating this.

I rescued a chihuahua 7 years ago from my local shelter. She has always been a happy and healthy dog.

About 3 years ago, while my ex and I were briefly separated- she lost complete mobility of her spine. My ex called me frantically after finding her immobile.

The emergency vets ran X-rays and tests. The vet found bb pellets engraved in her spine. There were no recent entry wounds and she had always been an indoor dog since I adopted her. The only explanation would have been abuse prior to adoption. She was always vastly afraid of men when I first adopted her.

Because of her disability, she wears diapers. The problem is, I can’t attend to her full-time. I started a business and it takes my whole day. Because of it- she only gets diaper changes 2 to 3 times a day. That in itself has caused her several UTIs. These UTIs are a pattern. Blood in urine, diarrhea- STRONG ODOR. Medication works then cycle repeats itself because I need to be around throughout the day to change her diapers, but I can’t. She constantly develops diaper rashes (I already use diaper rash cream and baby powder.)

My family has pleaded I put her to sleep. My ex refused to help me with our chihuahua and stole our husky.

She’s a happy dog aside from her immobility. She’s like a full-time baby. ... but I can’t dedicate myself to her full-time. Because of it - it’s impacting her health.

She has a wheelchair, but she hates it. I don’t like having her outside as she drags and it hurts her skin (bleeding). I already bought multiple drag bags to protect her skin and she destroys them. So I just keep her inside.

I’ve contacted rescues and unfortunately no responses. My family keeps asking me to put her to sleep as it’s unfair to her.

I can’t seem to do it. It breaks my heart and she’s a happy pup. She plays, she cuddles, and loves to be petted.

Anybody have any advice or been in somewhat a similar predicament?
