Getting two cats comfortable with one another? Having some difficulties...

My SO and I adopted a kitten a few months ago, whom we adore. However, his former roommate has a cat only a few months older and he unfortunately needs to find a new home for her. We thought it would be great to give our cat a friend and agreed to try having the other cat at our apartment for about a week to see if they get along, but we are having some difficulties getting them acquainted.

Note, our cat is very sweet, bonded to me, and quite shy. The other cat is also quite sweet, but much more outgoing, independent, and easily adaptable. For instance, when we brought ours home, she wouldn't leave the bedroom for nearly a week - it took her a while to get comfortable with going out to the living room or kitchen. The new cat was immediately comfortable exploring the whole apartment as soon as she was brought over.

I regret that we didn't immediately separate them and put the other cat in our bedroom so that our cat's curiosity would get the best of her and she'd acclimate. The other cat showed interest in ours, but ours cowered, was shaking, and would not leave my side. Ours also will not play with us (even with the other cat in the room), isn't really eating, and I haven't see her use the litter box.

We now have the other cat in the bedroom, but I'm not sure where to go from here! I feel guilty leaving the other cat separated with us going to occasionally sit with and play with her, and ours seems so upset stressed out by her presence...she won't even go near the door, even when I put food near it.

Any way to salvage this??
