On Monday we found out my 5 year old pitbull has cancer. It was a huge shock and so far, this has been one of the worst weeks of my life. Our vet recommended surgery as soon as possible to remove the tumour growing on the side of her neck. Without hesitation we agreed and she had her surgery on Thursday.
Unfortunately, with the surgery came complications. They had to cut nerves and blood vessels to remove it. Now she can’t blink her left eye, and that side of her face droops. Food falls out of her mouth when she eats. She’s miserable and in pain, and with her pain meds she’s drowsy and confused. They even had to put in a drain tube.
At the moment, her head is wrapped up in a bandage with gauze to soak up the fluid. She already tries rubbing it and scratching at it. Tomorrow she gets the tube out and will have exposed stitches. They’re in a position where a cone will rub against them.
I’m unsure what my vet will recommend, but before we go in tomorrow, does anyone have any tips on how we can stop her scratching her stitches? Alternatives to cones or anything like that?
TLDR; How can I stop my dog scratching her neck stitches if she can’t wear a cone?
