I will be moving out in a year or two and want a pet to keep me company, but not sure what to get.

I just recently got a really nice job and will be able to move out on my own in a year or two, for the first time. I'm scared and nervous to be by myself, so I want to try and plan on getting a pet to keep me company. I've had pets all my life, but I'm not really sure what to get. I could get a pet now, but my grandparents are heavy smokers and I don't want to subject an animal to that, even though I keep my room as clean as possible.

I work Mon - Fri, 9 hours a day (a typical work schedule), but I work the night shift. I'm not sure if this would be too much time for a pet to be home alone or what. Ultimately I think I would prefer a dog, but I know they require a lot of attention, and I don't know if me working would be an issue. Really, I want a pet that will be affectionate, loyal, & playful, but be okay while I'm at work at night.

I've thought about getting a hedgehog, but they aren't very affectionate. Other pets like rats (which sound awesome) don't really live too long, so I'm not sure what to do. I like cats, but I don't think one would really be right for me. Most of the ones I've had or been around just want their 5-10 minutes of petting or play time and then are done with you haha.

Does anyone have any advice or suggestions? I'm open to more "exotic" pets, I just really need a companion.
