My Grandmother’s Dog Passed Away Unexpectedly Yesterday

Long story short, her Lhasa Apsa had his kidney stones removed and that whole evening after the surgery he wouldn’t eat or keep medication down, which was kinda expected. He seemed to be in lots of pain and was throwing up thick phlegm so she called the ER vet around 2AM and they recommended she double his dose cause 1/4mg sounded too low. That seemed to help so she put him in his crate to sleep. She wakes up around noon and notices he’s still in his crate, but she doesn’t bug him. A little while later she checks on him again and he’s convulsing, so she freaks out and runs every red light on the way to the ER, but he sadly did not last the trip.

He was her mental illness service animal and she spent all her time caring for him since she doesn’t work. He was the purposes she found to live - she groomed him like every other week herself, brushed his teeth twice a day, scrap booked his pictures, really anything she could to give him a happy life, cause he kept her company in her darkest hours. This event ended with her in an ambulance and in the psych ward for a panic attack and now that she’s stable and settled at home, I feel like all I can do is help her grieve. We stopped by the ER vet to let her say her final goodbyes and she just held him and talked to him for a good 45 minutes. I work at a pet store and see dogs allllll day, and often comfort grieving pet owners, but her dog had a heavy part of her daily life for 4 years, and now he’s gone. I don’t have any specific questions, I’m just looking for advice moving forward to help her heal and hopefully move on to get another dog. Today has been such a trip.
