Neighbors dog got out multiple times last night and the whole situation seems very fishy.

Last night I got home from work around 9:30. When I opened my car door I was immediately greeted by what appeared to be a great dane/boxer mix, male, around 120lbs. He was a little skittish so I fed him turkey and had him sit long enough to enter in the phone number on his tag, happy to see he had a collar. Turns out his owners were a few doors down from me and a man in his thirties came to get him. The dog wouldn't go near him. He was cowering with his tail in between his legs, slowly backing away as the man got closer. I asked if he wanted some treats to lure him with and the man said 'no.' I headed back inside and he thanked me for my help.

Within minutes of entering my house I let my dogs in the backyard and they started barking like mad. I look outside and see the same great dane/boxer on the other side of the fence, this time without a collar. I go back outside and I guess the commotion also alerted his owner because I see the man coming down his driveway. So within five minutes of being made aware his dog had gotten out the dog was back outside and missing his collar. Again the dog wouldn't go with him, again I offered the man treats, again he denied them. I could absolutely chalk the dogs behavior up to the fact that he knows he's in trouble, but what I found strange is the fact the first time he got out he had a collar, but within minutes of being found the owner takes his collar off. That alone screams irresponsible dog ownership.

I go back inside and start putting my groceries away. A few minutes pass, my dogs are back inside, and they start barking at the front door. I peer out the living room window and guess who's there! The great dane/boxer is investing my porch. I was livid. I go back outside and he immediately starts wagging his tail so I sit on the step and this sweet boys lays right next to me, big brown eyes fixated on mine. It's clear he doesn't want to go back home, and based on his owners reactions I'm wondering if they let him out on purpose. We sit for a while and I weigh my options; call his owners again, call animal control (at this point its 10pm in a small town, they likely would tell me they wouldn't be out until morning), or hide him away in the garage because he's breaking my heart. After almost 20 minutes of loving on him I see a lady come out of his house and look up and down the street. I call out that I've got her dog and she starts ranting about how he's the worst fucking dog and a piece of shit. His tail goes between his legs and he paws at my front door. At this point I'm totally crushed. I offer her treats and she takes me up on it and eventually lures the dog back inside.

The whole ordeal isn't sitting well with me this morning. Is there anything I could've done differently, or should do if this happens again?
