Disclaimer: I do not know if this is because my cat has a severe allergy or something, but I'm posting it here anyway as a precaution!
Cat owners, please be careful about what food you purchase for your furball! I have come across two foods from the Purina brand that have caused him to get sick within just a week of eating it.
And we're not talking about vomiting.
We're talking full on Grand Mal, 'piss yourself and the floor' spasming seizures.
Here's how it played out for him.
The first time it started hpanning was when I still lived with my parents. We were giving him and the other three cats a Purina brand cat food.. I don't remember the mixture. We were feeding this to him for weeks, maybe even a few months.
At first, it started out small. He would just stop every now and again and kinda.. wobble back and forth. His head sort of 'bumping' forward and back.. We didn't think much. We thought he was slipping on the newly installed hard floor. This continued for a while, and it gradually got worse.. sometimes he'd fall over and just lay there, dazed...
These continued in worsening frequency and intensity, and it was merely a few weeks, maybe a month later, he was having full Grand Mal, violent seizures, falling off furniture and losing complete bladder control on the floor and carpet. These were happening, at least 5-7 times a day. We had to close him up in a crate at night to keep frmo hurting himself. And even so, I resorted to keeping him in my room almost 24/7 where I could watch him.
After a while, he was getting so weak and quite frankly pathetic. Thinner and weaker. he was sleeping (even more than usual) and hardly ever moving. Quite frankly, we thought he was going to die very soon. He was just so tired and exhausted he was helpless.
We got him medicated with.. I guess it's a tranquilizer.. or.. barbituate or something? It was pentobarbital. A very small dose that for lack of a better word, made him stoned or start sleeping extra for a week or two... btu after that, the side-effects died down and he was no longer drowsy. But it cured him of the seizures, so we thought... Only a couple months later, they started surfacing again, despite the medication.
We had no idea it was the food that was doing it. Not until we changed foods some time later and his seizures gradually faded away to nothing.
----------------------------
That was Purina brand. it was a dry food, again I can't remember what mixture. However, it started happening again just recently. Why? Because I thought I'd treat him to some wet food. Purina's Fancy Feast Medleys.
He started having the very beginning phases of seizures within a week of feeding him a tiny can of the food every other day. I had to throw out the entire case of canned food.
To make a long story short: Please, be very, very careful about some of Purina's cat food. Be very careful about what you feed your cat, and keep note of any weird behaviours that pop up after changing their food! We believe my cat almost died due to this stuff!
And please, keep in mind. I don't know if he's allergic to something, or if there's something legitimately dangerous in the food. I'm just posting this as a warning.
