I got a cat about a month ago. I'm renting an apartment and the owner didn't allow me to get a cat at first, but then agreed on the condition that it would have to be non-destructive. I wasn't worried because the cat behaved himself in his foster home but recently I caught him climbing the wall next to the apartment door. I immediately sprayed him with water and gave him a scolding but I'm not sure if it helped. I've noticed first signs of damage on the wallpaper, thankfully it's still subtle but I know it won't stay this way for long if the cat keeps doing his thing. I've tried spraying the walls with vinegar solution, but the smell dissipates pretty quickly without me constantly re-spraying and honestly, I'm not too keen on having my place reek of vinegar. I'm not sure if the smell bothers him too much anyway, this cat seems to break the laws of cat science. I've clipped his claws, but they still feel plenty sharp to me - maybe I've clipped too lightly but I'm afraid of hurting him if I clip too close to the paw. I've ordered the glue-on claw caps online but it'll be weeks before they get here and I'm not sure if my crappy little local pet stores have them. I don't think he's being intentionally destructive, just young and playful, and tends to go batshit crazy when he's in a super playful mood, and that corner with the wall that got victimized is one of his favourite spots because 1) that's where I keep the outdoor shoes which he LOVES to play with, 2) it's next to the apartment entrance and he's been trying to get outside for a while now, but I don't want to take him out until I give him his shots. I always hear him wreaking havoc in there but I've never caught him doing anything worse than playing with the shoes (which I'm fine with), until that time. Now I always go to check on him whenever I hear him messing around in there, but he just storms off when he hears me coming. Any chance there's a quick way to make him stop climbing the wallpaper, at least until I get him the claw caps (that I'm not sure will even work for him) or until he gets older and less hyper? I don't want to end up evicted and I definitely don't want to get rid of the cat. I realize that there may be thousands of asks like that, but the common suggestions don't seem to work for my asshole of a kitty.
Some info on the cat: invited himself to my friends house in October. Super friendly, but wasn't microchipped and no-one was looking for him so she offered him to me bc she couldn't keep him and didn't want to have to give him to the shelter. Less than 1 year old. Now he's been given a clean bill of health, was neutered, microchipped, not-yet-vaccinated but will be done as soon as my schedule allows it. Has a ton of toys, boxes etc but likes to play with things that aren't meant to be played with - I'm fine with that as long as it's not furniture or walls or something breakable. Has a small condo that he never scratches. He's a bit "special" in a way that catnip doesn't seem to work on him. I've tried catnip, valerian root and some mysterious "play spray" from the pet store to make him use the scratch post, but he just shrugs them off, and also doesn't seem too bothered but the smell of vinegar and citrus (his smelling sense seems to be working otherwise, but will consult the vet just in case). Thankfully, he's not very scratchy so I wasn't too bothered until I found him climbing the damn wall.
