My dog recently had surgery to remove a carcinoma from her face. She has 9 stitches and in a few days they will be removed. In the meantime she’s been wearing her cone and unsuccessfully attempting to scratch her wound. I won’t see her vet again until the removal of her stitches, in the meantime though, I’m trying to find information on how long after her stitches have been removed should she keep the cone on. Most information I’ve found says it can come out when her stitches come out. However, my girl is a big dog with a heavy scratch. I’m worried she could reopen the wound or hurt herself. Has anyone else experienced something similar with their pets? Her stitches are coming out on the 12 day post surgery mark. She also has another small incision that was used for a drain tube. This wound is still fresh but our vet believes it will close on its own and doesn’t need to be stitched up. So there’s that to consider as well. Any recommendations or advice? This is the first surgery my dog has ever had and it’s also been a major one. It’s been a rough week and I just want her to heal as best as she can.
