Was given my dog her flea/tick/worming tablet the other day and I realised...

I have never seen or heard of anyone's pets having fleas in this country, and very few people I know actually take the preventative steps. I have actually never seen a flea before, on or off an animal. I mentioned this to a few of my friends and they all said the same thing.

I know of one cat getting a tick, and that was way out in the sticks.

Are fleas not as common as they used to be? Is it maybe just that they aren't common where I live (Ireland)? I'm going to continue giving my dog flea treatments anyway, but I'm just curious.
