At my wits end with my cats...

Obligatory ‘I’m on my phone, sorry for formatting’ but I’m having some issues with my cats and I’m hoping you guys would have some advice.

Last November, my boyfriend of four and a half years and I adopted two cats, Smudge and Cat, based on the knowledge that we’d be living in the house we were living in at the time for a good few years (my dad’s house while he was away in Greece) which was the perfect house to raise two kitties. THE VERY NEXT DAY, I had a phone call from my dad telling us we might have to move out, and sure enough by February we got a very weirdly worded “move out asap” letter (that’s another story altogether). We struggled so hard to find somewhere that would accept pets, and when we finally found somewhere we had to take it even though it’s ridiculously overpriced. And now we’re going to have this problem again after Christmas when we start looking for somewhere else to move to, it’s too expensive and too small here.

So that’s kind of the background story, the problem with the kitties I have (Smudge in particular) is that she keeps peeing on the sofa and occasionally the bed. It’s so goddamn frustrating.

There’s enough litter trays, the litter trays are clean and the vet says there is nothing wrong with her. However when I went to see the vet her teeth were in terrible condition and she might have to have two teeth out which is going to cost me nearly £500. Bearing in mind I am 21 years old and have no savings what to speak of, and dental treatment is not covered by my pet insurance. She’s been doing it both in the old house and the new flat, in fact she completely destroyed our old sofa; the smell was horrendous however much I cleaned it.

In addition to this, Smudge has taken it upon herself to get the zoomies between 3 and 5 am every. single. morning. No matter how much I tire her out the night before, she will still run around like crazy around these times waking me and my boyfriend up, causing us both to be extremely tired and moody the next day. As you can probably guess this is causing quite a strain on our relationship as we’re getting extremely sleep deprived and fed up. My bf wants to get rid of her and secretly so do I as I am sick to death of cleaning the sofa nearly every other day and the whole flat just stinking of cat pee, as well as never getting more than 2 hours sleep at a time. We also have the financial worry of not being able to pay vet bills or find a place we are proud to live in and can afford!

I really hope someone has some good advice. Am I a bad person for wanting to get rid of both the cats? Is it a good idea to get rid of both of them even though it is only Smudge causing the issues, but Smudge and Cat are sisters and have always stayed together? I feel terrible that I’m even thinking about this but I value my relationship with my bf so much and if getting rid of my cats solves the problem, then so be it, however guilty I’m going to be.

If you’ve made it this far I appreciate it as I know this is long, any advice would be much welcome!

TL;DR - cat causing strain on my relationship by keeping us awake at night and peeing on furniture. Not sure what to do as I want to get rid of them but would feel so guilty but also kind of relieved...
