Hi there. I want to preface that him and I both grew up with family dogs when we were younger but this is our first dog of our own. We are learning a lot! We already have 2 cats that I have adopted and have had for a few years. We started living together earlier this year.
Hello, I just need to vent/ask for some advice. BF and I got a new dog 3almost 3 weeks ago, a 1 year old lab mix. Shes great and we love her so much but I, in particular, sometimes feel suffocated with how much attention and work she needs. I've lived with dogs before and grew up with one, I knew it was going to be different than cats. But wow I feel so tired everyday just trying to make sure she gets tired.
Getting the dog was mainly my BF's idea, I was supportive and have always seen us having a dog so this was no issue. We have been doing really well socializing her and training her with tricks and puzzles. The main problem we are having is her new, growing separation anxiety, especially towards me.
I walk her in the morning and take her to the dog park in the afternoon because my work schedule allows me to and my BF work schedule doesn't. I dont mind it but it's becoming clear that she relies on me a lot more than him probably due to this. She waits by any door I close even if she is still in a room with my BF. I dont give her any special attention when I leave a room or comeback. We just dont know how to help her be more independent and not be our shadow. We got a little gate recently and I sometimes block the kitchen so she cant come in, but she just lays right in front of the gate and waits. Seems hardly any different
Him and I are planning to take advantage of a few free training classes we found through her adoption, but I was just coming on here to see if this sounds normal for her age and to gain any insight or tips from other dog parents. Otherwise she is an amazing dog and she is so fun to have and own, but the following-me-around part is getting a little concerning...and not to mention old
