Earlier this year, my stepmom got a dog from a breeder. He is a wheaten terrier who isn’t an adult yet, but is still close to full maturity. Before this, she’s gotten multiple dogs, shelter and non shelter, and she wasn’t willing to take care of any of them. She still feeds them and tells her son to take them out but will keep them in a kennel 9/10ths of the day because she’s unwilling to spend any time with them. When I’m over there, which is half of the time, I try to play with him and pet him, but he is so aggressive and untrained. When I take him out of his kennel he always tries to either run up and down the steps, usually injuring himself, or rip open the trash for food. If I try to stop him or pet him, he barks at me and bites me. He isn’t strong enough to maul me but probable would if he was. It usually takes both me and my sibling pinning him down to get him back in his kennel. He only listens with treats, but can’t be trained with them. He pees and poops all over the house when unsupervised. Other methods of training fail too, assertiveness won’t work, closing his jaw won’t work, and pinning him down won’t work. It was much easier to train the lab at my other home, he was quick to learn things with treats, is very sweet and wants to play all the time, and always knows to go outside to pee or poop. I feel bad for my stepmoms dog, but can’t deal with his behavior. I’ve tried to convince my stepmom to get rid of him, but she usually just considers it. What can I do to either train him or make him happier?
