Help! Introducing a puppy to older cats..

My wife and I live in a two bedroom apartment with the 13 year old cats. They’re typically the sweetest fun cats I have ever met. They’ve never hissed or swiped at me or anyone I know. We just got a 12 week old mini Goldendoodle and I was curious the best way to introduce them.

We got the pup this morning and worked on getting him accustomed to the house and his area & bed. Then I took the blanket he came with and let the cats smell it. They hung out separately for a few hours then we switched their rooms to let them get familiar. After we allowed them to be in the same room separated by a gate. They casually approached each other when the cat smacked the pup through the gate. I was there but reaction time wasn’t as fast as the cats.

Later the cats were in their perch and we let the pup explore the same room. The cats watched intently but all good. The puppy really has no interest in the cats. Then one cats hopped down and there were no issues. When the cat walked over to the puppy is leaned forward to smell the cat and caught another wack.

I know this will take time and won’t be solved in a day. Does anyone have any good tips on how to make this introduction as smooth as possible? I’m planning on getting the cats nails cut or dulled to ensure it doesn’t hurt the pup too bad if it catches another smack before I separate them.

Any and all input would be sooo appreciated.
