Okay, my wife brought in a dog who had been stray for atleast 6 months and she’s been behaving great until some family members had a house fire and we had their kitten staying with us. We have a back bedroom blocked off with a baby gate to allow our own adult cat to have a space to get away from the dogs if he wants too and that’s where the kitten had been staying and she randomly decided to walk out of that room and our new dog sprinted down and bit onto her hard enough that when I got her to let go the kitten was barely alive and I could Feel many crushed ribs. The kitten passed soon after and now me and my wife are terrified that our new dog will go after our cat. We thought about getting rid of the dog but like it or not we’ve became attached and it would be just as hard as loosing one of our others. We’re watching them like a hawk and I am hoping to be able to encourage good behavior between them but I don’t know exactly what steps to take like a more knowledgeable trainer would. Our cat is full grown and she’s never had an issue with full grown cats before so I’m wondering if the small size of the kitten reminded her of a mouse which she likely ate while being a stray. I’m very worried about it so any advice would be great, thanks!
