Indoor cat lost a few days ago, has popped up on roof past two days but keeps running away. At a complete loss...

Hi all,

My girlfriend's cat got out of the house somehow on June 27, and for the first two days was nowhere to be seen. She is out of town for 2 months for an internship, and so I put up missing posters and walked around the block shaking the cats favorite cat treat bag and calling his name.

He normally NEVER bolts out the door, but my girlfriend does live with an aunt, so we assume that the aunt forgot to close the door one day and the cat wandered out. The cat normally is extremely timid, and does not ever go outside - he is fixed, 3 years old, and very timid to being outside in general.

For the first two days, he was nowhere to be seen despite my efforts - however, he ended up showing up on the roof of the house 2 nights in a row, but was too scared to come down. Everytime someone tries to get up to the roof however, the cat just bolts and disappears and is no where to be found. Unfortunately, he didn't show up on the roof last night either.

We have left some food up there at night time to try and lure him over; otherwise, we don't know if he would be getting any food or water from elsewhere. He is microchipped, and has a collar with contact information on a tag.

I am now getting really desperate to get the cat back in as soon as possible, especially before July 4th. I'm scared the fireworks may scare him away even further from home. I will have a cat trap tomorrow, and am thinking of leaving it on the roof along with some food and water in hopes that he goes into the trap.

I was hoping to ask for advice or get some tips to increase my chances of getting our cat back. Should we be leaving food out overnight for example? Am I doing anything wrong? Any help would be appreciated.
