Long post warning!
I have a 5yo female rottie, who has some issues with jealousy.
She was initially raised in a home with multiple cats and another dog and had no issues, other than playfulness towards the cats.
I then moved with her to a home where she was the only pet for about 2+ years. However I frequently brought her back home and she demonstrated that she could behave around the cats until my mom adopted a new cat that was afraid of dogs. This seemed to ignite a much more intense prey like reaction.
Fast forward my mom has to sell her home and wants me to take one of her cats. I am about a month in to trying to reintroduce the two and I have some red flags 🚩
-
My rottie is jealous of any attention I give to other animals inside the house.
-
She’s shown me that she is interested in chasing and attacking small animals outside the home.
-
She is much more territorial in our home now than she ever was in the other home... maybe because she was never the alpha in the house?
-
She’s overly excited and barking whenever I am near the cat ( gated area to keep cat safe)
Now I am okay with keeping them separate and my cat is older 16/17y and she seems happy with her own room however my bf and I are at the point where we would like to move in together and he has two cats. Is there hope? Neither of us want to give up our babies!
