Is my cat dead?

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this. I just need this off my chest and don't know where to do it.

A little over three years ago now a very friendly stray cat started showing up around my area in my very small town. My family and I started feeding and petting him and then it wasn't long before he was spending most of his time on my porch or less than a block away. We had accepted each other as family. He had a few family members of his own that would show up quite a bit too.

Last winter (so over a half a year ago now) we had a pretty severe but not record-breaking blizzard. I realized a few days later that I hadn't seen my cat in a while. This was normal, as I didn't go outside super often. But the period of time where I didn't see him grew long enough that I had to accept that he wasn't going to show up on my porch again.

Without him around, my family had little motivation to keep putting food out, and the other cats stopped showing up shortly after too. I presumed him to be dead, but I can't get him off my mind lately. He had places to hide from the snow, as he would hide out in the gutters or in my garage every so often. I don't know why or how he would have frozen or starved to death. I saw a roadkilled cat that looked scarily like him a couple weeks later, though I confirmed that the chilling sight wasn't him and I pray that didn't happen to him.

What are the odds he's really dead? Is it at all likely that he found a new area or that somebody found him and did something with him? Or am I just clinging to a false hope? If he is alive, is there any way for me to realistically go about finding out? I just miss him so much and need some closure here. Thanks.
