Hello. My boyfriend's family has a Jack Russell/Chihuahua mix named Peanut. When we first started dating (around 1 year ago), the dog was fine, cuddled in the bed with us, was excited to see me, etc.
I'm an animal lover, but I will say I'm not usually a fan of small dogs. When his family adopted a beagle around Christmas, Peanut was really territorial and bit the new dog. Around this time, I was tucking Peanut in (he looked cold) and he randomly tried to bite me. Because he was a dick to the new dog & tried to bite me, I started really disliking Peanut. I kinda ignored him when he came to me and always said things like "peanut, you're a dick."
Fast forward to now, and Peanut seems actively scared of me? The last month or so, he seems very wary of me. I feel really bad, because I obviously don't want Peanut to be scared of me, even if I don't like him. I don't understand why he would start acting this way. He doesn't often come into a room if I'm there, unless I have food. He'll chill with me when I'm eating, and I'll give him snacks, but after that, he avoids me. Today he was literally shaking when I came over, like nearly cowering? He doesn't do this with anyone else.
I feel really bad for the lil guy, and I'm wondering if anyone knows why he is acting this way? My boyfriend said it's because Peanut can pick up on my dislike? But I don't know. No dog has ever acted like this around me. Their new beagle loves me and cuddles me. :(
