My boyfriend and I adopted a 10 year old kitty from the shelter yesterday. Some of her behavior is worrying me. She has 2 litter boxes in our apartment, a couple of toys (light pointer, catnip mice, strings, although she doesn’t seem interested in them), plenty of food and water (she is still eating the food she had at the shelter because they told me not to introduce anything new just yet). I’ve left all of the doors open in case she wants to explore along with night lights so she can see. She’s eating and drinking and using her litter box. Last night was her first night here and she caterwauled until 4 in the morning. It caused me so much worry because I was afraid she was scared or hurting and there was nothing I could do. Should i ignore her when she does this? I’ve read online that if you go to her when she cries it’s not always a good thing because it reinforces that caterwauling = attention. At about 4 i drove to walmart and bought some earplugs. She finally stopped, but I still couldn’t sleep because I was just worried... Today she puked a few times (clear liquid, and it was after she drank water). I felt even worse for her. I called the shelter and explained to them all of my worries along with her vomiting episode, and they assured me that this is normal behavior for a cat in a new environment. They also said that if it continued for more than a few days to call back. What can I do to make this easier for her? She’s hiding under the bed right now, and I’m leaving her alone because I’ve also read that it’s best not to mess with them while they’re in their safe spot. What should I do about the wailing at night? Do you guys think she’s vomiting because she’s scared? Should I confine her to a room for a few days or continue to let her explore the apartment? I’m just worrying a lot
