I lost my dog on 7/10/2019. As of posting this, it’s 7/12/2019.
He’s a black mouth cur, almost twelve years old, and I’ve had him since he was a pup. He’s been with my from childhood, back when I took pictures of him on my ds, and he’s been with me as an adult.
He’s only gone missing from our house one time. That was years ago, and he returned home shortly after being shot with a pellet gun by someone. However, he’s yet to return to our house.
I live with my parents here, and our place is fenced and gated. The back of our property is gated, with a swinging gate, and the front gate is electric. There’s no way for our dogs to leave without them slipping through the front gate. This is probably what happened, as my mom and my sister constantly leave our front gate open and my other dog has slipped out in the past. So has this one. If he’s feeling needy, he’ll follow you into the street, so we have to drag him back
Basically, someone in my family didn’t pay attention, and drove off without checking if he was inside. He wandered off, and until today, we’ve had no sight of him. However, we searched a road that is connected to our back property, which is able to be accessed if you walk around from the front, along a creek to the side of our house, and then continue along that way. We’ve put up dozens of posters, and the person who gave us a tip told us he had been seen crossing that road. Well, my dad and I checked, and yep, he had been there. He ran out from the woods alongside the road, looked at my dad, and ran off. I (probably like a dumbass) tried to cut him off, but he was able to duck under a fence and run back into the woods.
This is super unusual behavior. He adores us and is super protective of our family. We treat him right and he’s lived a long and happy life. I don’t know why he’s doing this. Pops thinks it’s rabies, and although I disagree because although unusual behavior is a symptom, I figured it was anecdotal and he was just off his rocker. I thought that maybe he was just out of his element and scared, as well as dehydrated. We were told by someone who owned property nearby that he walked up to him, and the guy even gave him water, and my dog even let him pet him (which isn’t unusual, he’s sweet to new people most of the time).
But he’s been running from my dad, and I don’t know why. This is the only reason my dad is suggesting rabies. I just don’t know what to think now. My mind is being overwhelmed by this thought of rabies. I’m afraid I’m gonna lose my dog. This dude has been with me through all of my anxiety attacks, depressive episodes, EVERYTHING. He sleeps in my bed, I give him scritches. He’s been my best bud most of my life. And now I’m scared he’s gone forever. I’m not ready to lose him yet, and I just need some advice.
Honestly, given the only symptoms he’s presented, is it likely to be rabies??? He’s dehydrated in this 100 degree Texas weather, and he’s never been in this situation. I just want to know if i should legitimately be worrying.
Sorry for the long post. Mods delete if this breaks the rules I guess.
