Separates 2 cats, not sure if this will get any easier

My ex and I recently broke up and with that came separating our two cats, siblings who have been together for 4 years. I had read about bonding and a lot of friends and family had said that the cats will he fine, they will adapt, etc. My ex took his cat about 2 weeks ago and my cat is still not doing well. She is needy for attention, meowing almost constantly, and seems distressed. I checked in with my ex and his cat has been about the same.

To try to help his cat he got a kitten last night and he said his cat has been openly hostile and he reached out to me because he doesn't know what to do. We don't want the cats to be miserable and my ex has offered to bring his cat back to live with me, I just feel awful because this cat is his best friend and I know he doesnt want to be without him, but we both care about the cats being happy and healthy.

Will they eventually be okay? Is there anything we can do to make this transition for them any easier?
