Should I still adopt a cat after getting a puppy

Me and my family have always had dogs around, about a year ago we rescued a cat and kept him for 2 days until we found his owner. The cat was so sweet that I've been wanting to adopt one ever since. I was in the process of visiting local shelters but at the same time a friend of the family got a litter of cocker spaniels and my parents adopted a little one. I'm happy to have the pup around and that they got to pick such a good buddy. My parents know I would like to have a cat and are fine with it so we chose the dog that we thought was the most calm in the eventuality of bringing a cat home. This cocker was born into a house with horses, dogs, cats and lots of different people coming in so he's pretty social but I don't know for sure how he would react to a cat in our home.

I've never had a cat and dog before so I don't know for sure what's the best way of getting them together. What I fear is both of them not getting along or being uncomfortable and not having a good quality of life. Do you think it's a good idea to get a cat right now? If I got one should I adopt an adult or a kitten?
