A couple of months ago, my kitten was diagnosed with a heart murmur. The vet said it was a grade 1-2, not at all serious but to be safe we took him for an EKG; that vet said he saw nothing. Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago and I noticed my kitten's coat wasn't looking quite the same. It was dull and just -different-; I thought it was just him shedding for the summer. On Monday night a friend and I noticed that his breathing was pulling ready hard and she found some bright green bile on the floor. I rushed him to the Vet ER at 2am and they said his breathing was fine (they counted 40 breaths p/m but I counted closer to 60) they said his murmur had increased to maybe a grade 3 and that their ultrasound showed no fluid outside of his lungs. To be safe I scheduled a cardiologist appt. the next day at 1pm. There they told me the worst newsI could have imagined: my 1 year old kitten is in advanced heart failure and has fluid in his lungs. They gave him about 9 months and started him on medication. Today, I am not noticing any improvement in his breathing (60b/p/m even on lasix) and he is lethargic, less responsive to noises/ movements, and he keeps stretching while laying down- I assume to try to get more comfortable. He is having little sneezes as well and hides under the bed for most of the day. Also, he has been less okay with being held, meowing and even hissing while he would normally snuggle in my arms. But when not being held, he is his snuggly self. When he is not sleeping or lying down, he still plays with his toys, has his normal huge appetite, is using the litter and is drinking water. I know that I will have to eventually put him to rest and I want to do it before he begins to suffer - I don't want to wait until he won't eat or cant use the bathroom. And most of all, I don't want him to die alone while i'm at work, so I am considering spending the entire holiday weekend with him and having it done on Sunday. With the fluid on his lungs and his overall behavior, do you think he is in pain? I should have asked his vet but I was in pure shock at the office and today is a holiday and they are closed. Medically, what might his quality of life be? His breathing has not slowed at all and I hate to even see him like this.
