Well we had an accident..(sad)

So i bought a 2001 Pontiac firebird the Fourth and me and my dad are planning on flipping it. It doesn't run so we have it in out uncle's drive way next to our barn with our cats. Basically this car has a glass canopy on it and has acres of glass. So it overheats easily. To overcome this we left the trunk open. Woopdedoo the cats see large open box and get in the hatch. 5 or so minutes later someone sees my car open and closed the door cats inside. We find them both 30 minutes later. One has passed do to heat stroke and the other in on the verge. We pull the cat out and I pet it with cool water in my hand and he seems to be ok now. Did I do the right thing or did I cause stress to the situation by shocking the cat with cold water or would it have died without it?
