What happens if you're give your cat flea medication intended for higher or lower than their weight?

I tried weighing my cats with the method of weighing myself on a bathroom scale and then doing it while holding them and subtracting the difference, but I'm not confident on the precision of the measurement, and both cats are right around the threshold for each medication, too (Advantage sells one for cats "9 lbs. and under" and another for "9 lbs and over" -- they're both about 10 lbs, give or take), so I'm worried that if I buy the medication for larger cats, they might actually be a bit under and overdose. I might be being overly cautious, but I'd like to be sure before giving it to them. Do you think maybe it would be best to go with the medication for smaller cats to be safe? If they're a little over, will the medication still be effective?
