I have two (light-of-my-life! awe-inspiring! demon-spawn!) six year old indoor cats. They are brother and sister and have always been together. While my lovely lady Medea is very good about the litter box, her brother Grock makes use of it... sparingly (always #2, #1 only if the gods are smiling upon us). He is an orange tabby, and I have been told my multiple vets that orange tabbies are more prone to this behavior. He is also a wall pee-er, so that complicates things. This has been going on for some time, so I have tried a lot of stuff:
In addition to spending a small fortune on (always false) UTI tests, I have 3 litter boxes (all super high walled), cleaned every day. I have experimented (carefully) with different litters (he likes certain clumping ones a bit better). I use cat attract. I have lately been giving him CBD oil (which I think is helping?). I have gone through a lot of Feliway. I have also tried some other natural supplements and treats and foods that are *supposed* to help. I clean up accidents as soon as I see them (I might be single-handedly keeping nature's miracle afloat) and try to reclaim his favorite spots with cat grass or scratchers etc.
Until recently, I had a very large cage with a liter box in it as a punishment/reward system (he would go in there if he peed outside a box and would be let out when he peed in the box). It worked somewhat, but he learned to game the system pretty quick. And the thing took up so much space, so when we moved recently, I got rid of that set up.
What I am doing now is literally putting him into the box when I think he needs to pee (I know his schedule and triggers decently). This has been working ok and he has been peeing in the appropriate place about 60-75% of the time.
I am asking yall if you have an advice on how to handle this. Am I overlooking something? He is well worth this effort (and there is no way/I have no interest in making him indoor/outdoor), but I would love if I did not have to constantly worry about it.
