Cat just will not stop going in a certain spot outside the box.

We have 3 cats, 2 male and 1 female. Long story short bone of them were planned, but it is what it is. I love them all dearly.

The one we've had the longest, Rey (male), has never had huge issues with boxes. He did mark a few times awhile back when he first moved into our house, but stopped before too long and had no issues with boxes. The other two came a year or so later, and he continued to he fine overall. The other male, Simon, eventually had some separation anxiety if we were gone too long, especially for a weekend trip home, and started going outside the boxes onto this one area of the living room. (We suspect it's Simon, because he whines and whines when were not with him, etc., and Rey never had issues with this when we left him before the other cats)

I believe this behavior hammered home the idea that this spot was an ok spot to go for Rey, both pee and poop. He kept peeing on the leg of a table, which is now basically trash. I tried to remedy by just putting a cat box there instead. Didnt work, he just goes outside the box right next to it. I tried to clean relentlessly with special expensive products, vinegar, baking soda, didnt work. We got the carpets professionally cleaned, then moved the furniture around so the couch is well over the spot and the entire wall he goes by is completely covered, didnt work. He now just goes under the couch, crouches, and pees. He hasn't pooped yet on the spot since we moved the couch, but continues to urinate. He has used boxes to poop no problem since moving the couch, so hes clearly capable of using the boxes.

He is otherwise healthy and seen by the vet. It has to be environmental or behavioral. We have not changed litter or box styles. All our boxes are basically large open top tubs which he has always preferred as a larger cat. He never used to be picky with liter, but our other male cat is very picky, so we're stuck with the standard old school clay liter (which I dislike, but they refuse corn, paper, etc)

I'm at my witts end, I don't know what to do next. Now, we have to move the entire couch to effectively clean up the urine.
