Cats aren’t using second litterbox?

ok so I got a female kitten from a shelter a little over a year ago, and this past week we adopted a new 5month old male kitten. They get along pretty well. I bought a second litter box because we only had one and I know you’re supposed to have number of cats plus 1, but i thought a second one would suffice. But they both only use the litter box we previously had. I tried googling it but only got solutions for cats going outside the litter box. They both use the litter box fine, but not the extra one. should i be concerned? or do they just not mind sharing one?

I’ve showed them both where it is, it’s in a quiet place. Its a corner hooded litter pan, exactly the same as the other one, same litter and everything. The 5month old kitten peed in it immediately after I set it up but since then it hasn’t been touched. I clean the litter boxes every day, sometimes multiple times a day.

The reason I’m worried is because we might bring home a new kitten today and i’m afraid they’ll all just be using the same litter box and it will get VERY messy in a short amount of time. I don’t mind it but i’m sure some of you know how bad a litter box can get when multiple cats are using it.
