How to help my dog that suffers from separation anxiety?

So a little backstory first. I adopted my dog about 2 years ago. For awhile I took care of him ETC. He has always had separation anxiety but never barked, whined or howled too horribly. However about 8 months ago I went to college and my lil buddy had to stay at home with my Dad. I finally got my own apartment near my school that allows pets, so I had my dog shipped up to me (it was about a 3 hour flight on a average temperature day). When I got him he seemed normal. He played with me like always and it was great. However today I left him alone for the first time. He is normally great when I leave him alone, but today he started to whine, howl and shriek( like he was in pain). It was the loudest I have ever heard him. I figured he would stop after a little bit so I left him for about 30 mins tops. When I got back my neighbor brought it up that he was shrieking and howling the whole time. I just moved into this apartment I really can’t have this kinda thing go on. My Dos is supposed to be used to being left alone at night, since both me and my dad work nights. But when I tried to leave tonight he started to shriek again. I had no choice but to take him to work and leave him in my car where at least he won’t bother anyone. I’m pretty lost, I know he is still adjusting to an entirely new place and all but I can’t just leave him at night when I go to work and piss off my brand new neighbors. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
