I'm moving to a new city and this will be the first time in my life where I a) will be living alone, and 2) will be able to afford pets. Bare in mind that I grew up with dogs and I have done volunteer work in shelters. I know what to expect from a dog.
Because I love dogs, my first though was to rescue a dog from the shelter in my new area. But I'm a bit disappointed. First of all, I like big dogs with energy. Unfortunately, however, all the dogs that fit this profile on that shelter - at least according to the people in the shelter - have behavioral issues that range from being intolerant with other dogs, intolerant with children, intolerant with cats, or not being friendly to leash. Plus, if I want to adopt a dog of large breed, the shelter carries out an investigation to see if I can indeed take care of the dog. All of this is leaving me a bit concerned, particularly because I'm not fluent in the language of this country. All the dogs that I grew up were adopted, and all of them had some behavioral, but not to the point described by this shelter.
So I keep going back and forth between adopting or buying a dog from a responsible breeder. I didn't want a puppy necessarily, but I rather having to deal with the slightly pain in the ass that the puppy stage is than having a dog that limits my future possibilities (regarding, for instance, adopting another animal, have a kid, or simply going for holidays with the dog).
At the same time, I never had cats, so I start wondering if I could adopt a cat for now, and think about getting a dog (being either through the shelter or from a responsible breeder) later - maybe a dog that fits my criteria will pop up in the shelter or maybe I'll become fluent enough to communicate better with the people from the shelter.
The thing is - I don't know what to expect from a cat. Are they more independent? How do I train them? Dog people that have cats, what do you think about your experience raising a cat?
