I'm 80% sure my cat is intolerant to several different grains. One of them is wheat, the other suspect is corn. She didn't show allergic reaction to all of them but she DID show digestive issues with all grainy foods I have tried so far, including the ones advertised for sensitive digestive system.
She has undiagnosed acid reflux and/or IBS and/or gastritis. Maybe this is more about that or maybe she developed them because I fed her with grainy wet food for over a year. (She was a stray I was taking care of in my yard the first 1-1,5 years. More like an outdoor cat I guess.)
Every time I see a discussion on Reddit about grain-free food the vets talk like it's very uncommon to be intolerant/allergic to grains but that the intolerance is usually about the animal protein. Granted, my cat also can't digest most types of meat and has a strong poultry preference. I'm just wondering if grain intolerance is uncommon and my cat is in minority, or are vets maybe underestimate the situation? For example, my cat passes lots of gas and all kinds of noises come from her tummy when she eats grainy food which her vet didn't take seriously but with grain-free food, it NEVER happens.
P.S. To be clear, I am worried about the substitutes in dry grain-free food and try to feed my cat with grain-free wet food more. Not trying to promote any kind of diet here. Just curious about grain intolerance/allergy in cats.
