My mom adopted a pup and shes extremely timid.

Im on mobile and this is long, I apologize. Ive just never dealt with this before and I would like some advice.

Tuesday night, my mom went to meet a woman who was trying to rehome her dog - a 3 year old rat terrier/Chihuahua mix. The only reason she said she wanted to rehome her is because her husband is very ill (he looked it) and she cant take care of the dog and her husband while working full time. Except, she had another larger dog that she didnt seem to want to rehome. So we're kind of suspicious.

My mom wasnt going to take her at first because she was initially looking for a larger dog, but she seemed neglected. She smelled of urine very badly, her coat was filthy and her nails were painfullly long. So she took the dog home anyway.

The dog isnt fixed, didnt get any shots and seemed to have a litter/s of puppies as there are clear sign shes nursed before. We asked if she had any health issues and the woman said no, but she obviously hasnt been to a vet either.

The dog apparently has never been outside ever in her life. Not even a walk. She only used wee pads indoors and has been eating low quality puppy food her whole life. For 3 whole years. Sad.

She did really Well in the car ride home but shes been GLUED to my mothers lap. Even when we took her out in our huge yard, she didnt leave my moms side and kept begging to be picked up.

From Tuesday until today, she barely ate anything and wouldnt even drink water at all. My moms been using a syringe to force a little water in her mouth a few times through the day and she only been interested in people food. Shes only peed one time yesterday and hasnt pooped at all. Today she finally ate some dog food and drank water on her own. Put still hasnt used the bathroom.

Her vet appointment isnt until next week but I got her into a groomer today (thank goodness) to get her nails trimmed as they were affecting the way she walks. We have to take her back in 3 weeks to get them trimmed again because they werent able to trim much this time without her bleeding. We also gave her a thorough bath. She was a champ through all of it.

I'm thinking shes just in shock because it was such a big change for her. She's very very timid and has to be in someones lap at all times. She doesnt show much emotion either. When the rest of my family met her, she didnt do anything. Not even a sniff. She was stone faced. However, shes not afraid of any of us. Her tail has been tucked pretty much the whole time being here though.

The original owner had repeatedly texted us to see how shes doing and seems upset. We asked her what the dogs normal behavior is and all she says is "shes a lap dog". She wont give details at all. So im thinking they were either really irresponsible dog owners and were too poor to give her a proper life or they were abusive. My mom thinks they were breeding her for money and had no use for her anymore. Its sad how many people have dogs that shouldnt. But im just happy shes free.

Anyway, id just like some insight until we take her to the vet. What are your opinions? What can we do to make her more comfortable and open up - be the dog that she should be. I want her to live a full healthy life but im stumped. Ive always had dogs with huge personalities, even from broken homes. Shes only been here 3 days so we're being patient. She seems to be coming around today just because she ate and drank but shes still timid.

TL;DR Our new family dog is very timid. Isnt using the bathroom and barely drinks water/eats. We suspect the original owners were super irresponsible/neglectful and I need advice on how to help her.
