My parents don't regularly take our pets to the vet?

Hi all - looking for some advice/insight/experiences

My whole life we've had pets (I'm 20 now), and I grew up with parents that are of the mindset that animals go to the vet when something is wrong or there is an emergency. It wasn't until about two/three years ago, in getting completely my own pet (a lil kitten) that I realized that many many people take their animals to the vet annually for regular checkups just like people. This makes complete sense to me, as their health is very important but as I said I was raised without knowing that was the norm for pet care. I've mentioned it to my family and they expressed that going to the vet is expensive and is therefore only when there is something wrong.

Anyway I can encourage them to see that its important? Or does anyone else have experience with this? I can't really tell if its more typical for pets to get annual visits, or if its more typical that they only get taken in for illness, injury, etc.
