the tl;dr: we want to keep the cat and nurse it to health and it's in our backyard right now (sleeping in a lawn chair quite happily lol). the backyard has a high, high privacy fence, a sliding glass door and a wooden deck, and enough outside dirt area for exploring. i know having outdoor cats is taboo and understandably so, but is there a way that we can keep a cat primarily outside (except in adverse weather ofc) until we get everything (see below) sorted out? I feel really responsible for her well being now lol but I've never owned a cat, just dogs.
THE BACKGROUND: so I live in a duplex and it's not pet friendly. I have an emotional support (disabled/senior) pitbull and my roommate has a cat that he took after his boyfriend couldn't take care of it anymore. landladies found out abt the cat, decided to not be dicks but did demand a $500 pet deposit fee (I know, I know). additionally, his cat WAS feral before he and his boyfriend received it from another girl. his cat is not animal or people friendly.
THE NEW KITTY: me and my roommate were walking my dog & he spotted a new neighborhood kitty we had never seen before. tuxedo with really bright yellow eyes, super tiny but not quite a kitten. he went to go pet it but it was so badly flea bitten that he decided not to. we talked it over on the rest of the walk and decided the cat definitely needed our help. it was so friendly and really seemed touch starved and we rly just wanted to give it a bath and apply some topical flea meds for relief. I've been reading the posts just now and saw that everyone recommended against this, but the cat literally just let my roommate bathe her??? we fed her and I suggested we take it by my vet to see if she's microchipped, which she wasn't. I think we both expected her to wander back to the other complexes, but she stayed on our front porch so we kept giving her attention all day bc she just seemed so like... lonely :|
she's been fixed, so that's good. I'm going to go ahead and vaccinate her and get her tested for whatever she may have + get some nice soothing skin/fur lotion for her too. I think we've both grown pretty attached to her because she is so sweet and affectionate and grateful to be cared for lol. we had her on our front porch/garage but decided to relocate her to our backyard. his cat is FURIOUS and my dog is indifferent, and we definitely can't have her inside given how pet-adverse his cat is...and of course, the landladies. (we are looking for a new place come January but who knows. we rly love our neighborhood and location as it stands. I'm really tempted to have her in my room exclusively but I feel like that's a bad idea with his cat...)
what is the most ethical solution to the problem, given all of the info? I'm trying to put my personal feelings aside to do what's best for the kitty, but I think she wants to stay with us too!! (included a picture b/c I rly do love her lmfaoo)
