Two weeks ago, I adopted a 5 year old cat who had been in a shelter for 6 months and god knows where before that. She was brought into my small apartment where I live with my 14 year old dog. I kept the cat in my bedroom the first couple of days and didn't plan to introduce her to my dog for awhile, but she was very eager to try to escape to explore my apartment. She saw my dog the very first day but that didn't deter her at all later on.
I keep her in my bedroom when I'm not home but let her roam around when I'm there so she gets used to my dogs presence. She will often sit near the dog when she knows the dog is sleeping/sitting in her open crate and has even snuck up to sniff her once or twice. If I'm standing between them, she will get very close to the dog without any real problems. This seems great except she gets upset if the dog gets too close, even if she's only walking near her and has swatted at her a few times. She never even tries to run away.
Why does she choose to sit so close to the dog when she's clearly not comfortable around her? What can I do to make her comfortable and not so upset? I tried to split them up again using a baby gate in the bedroom, but the cat will go out of her way to be near the dog! It's harder to keep the cat away from her than the other way around.
Any advice or input would be really appreciated! Thanks!
