For almost a year, our dog has been unable to walk. It started with him having a hard time getting up, and then he fell while trying to get up some stairs (I think his hips/spine are damaged) and was completely unable to walk. We took him to the vet, they gave us medicine and steroids for it and told us that that was pretty much all we could do besides putting him down, and that he was past his life expectancy (He's a 11+ Lab mix). He was able to hop around for a while, but that didn't last.
From there his condition has only gotten worse. We (mainly me) used to lift him so that he could go outside, but now whenever anyone tries to get him out he growls or snaps at them. Now he uses the bathroom all over the house, which obviously smells horrible. He just barely drags himself around with his front paws. His back looks broken and gnarled, and it is very hard to see him like this.
When he was first injured everyone in the house decided that we take care of him until he eventually died on his own (somehow). Between then and now I have been mainly responsible for taking care of him because my mom works long hours, my sister moved out and my grandmother isn't strong enough and doesn't care. At this point, everyone else agrees that he needs to be put down and I am completely ready. My mother is the only holdout.
We've had our dog since he was a puppy and we obviously love him, but it's time to let him go. I think she is so hesitant because in the past year and a half, 2 of her friends died, and she doesn't wanna lose another important part of her life. I understand this but she is being completely delusional about the situation and I am at my wits end.
How can I get her to face that we need to finally let him go?
TLDR; Dog is severely disabled, will never walk again, and my mom wont put him down
