I feel so bad for him, and while 9/10 times I'd just get him to the vet right away, I'm feeling pretty much at a loss now.
Starting about 4 days ago, my cat was refusing to eat or drink, and had occasional retching and was super lethargic. I was worried he had a blockage in his stomach or something.
One $300 vet bill later- nothing shows up on xray, he got fluids and a hunger enducer. He goes home and immediately eats, although not much.
I coax him to eat, but he doesnt drink anything, and it seems like he has to work extra hard to swallow food, otherwise he coughs it back up. Okay, back to the vet.
Vet does a throat xray after I mention what I've been seeing. Nothing shows on the xray. Vet suggests he ate a bug (???) That maybe irritated/bit his throat going down. I call bullshit, but she doesnt suggest anything else other than enticing him to drink liquids with tuna juice.
Well what do ya know, as soon as he gets home, he drinks a TON of water on his own volition.
Now it seems, while I can mostly keep him fed and hydrated, he's still having coughing issues. If hes laying around, then gets up, cough and gag. In the morning after a long sleep, he will have a huge initial coughing and gagging fit. It really feels like something might come up each time, but nope. And it's not constant. He seems to cough/gag on average like only one every 1-2 hours.
He doesn't meow anymore, he gags if he purrs too hard. I just feel awful, but I'm also at my credit limit for his vet bills and broke myself, and would have to start borrowing money probably to see any more vets.
Should I just keep waiting and see if he gets over it? I'm super worried about him.
