My 11 year old cat started throwing up about 2 months ago. At first it was spittle and then became bile which suggested to me that she was not eating. I took her to the vet and he noted she had lost 1.5lbs. He took an X-ray, blood work, and ultrasound which all came back fairly positive with some slight concern about kidney issues in the future but otherwise ok. He gave her a water injection, b12 shot, and appetite stimulant and when I brought her home she started eating. I let thing go for another two weeks and then I noticed she was throwing up bile again and appeared to be losing weight. I took her to the emergency room as upon closer inspection I noticed her ears were yellow indicating she had jaundice implicating fatty lipodosis. They did another ultrasound where they didn’t see anything and checked her blood. The doc confirmed she had liver disfunction as a result of fatty lipodosis most likely cause by not eating. They wanted to hospitalize her and out in a feeding tube but I couldn’t afford that as they quoted me between 3k and 5k for all the tests and care they wanted to give her. I decided I would force feed her myself in an attempt to renew her energy level and get her eating.
I took her to the vet last Saturday...she has lost 4.5 lbs...needless to say she is skin and bones. again they wanted to hospitalize her but are unable to tell me what the underlying cause of this is so I asked for a different type of appetite stimulant and have continued force feeding her this week to no avail.
I’m at a loss with what to do. My cat will not eat. I’m force feeding her, trying different brands of foods, giving her the appetite stimulant. She is lethargic but not out of it and while I recognize that cats are stoic she does not appear to be overly suffering. Her personality has changed and she is not her social chirpy self.
When do I know it’s time to euthanize my cat? I can afford to pay thousands of dollars toward a vet bill that won’t address the underlying issue (whatever is causing her to not eat) and I’m trying to do whatever I can at home to get her eating...but I’m starting to feel like this is not going to end well but I can’t seem to figure out when it is time to make the decision. Any help would be appreciated. I should note that she is drinking water and using the litter box which I have taken as a positive sign but still no eating and has started vomiting part of the food I’ve been feeding her (not all though). She is also no longer jaundiced.
Really would love to hear everyone’s thoughts...never had to make this decision before.
