I am a college student living in an off campus apartment with two friends. Earlier this summer, I found a sick stray kitten in the park and nursed it back to health. Both roommates were excited to have the kitten in our apartment and gave the green light. My parents were not so keen about me keeping the little guy but I had a lot of support from people around me, so I continued to take care of him. Ive gotten all his vaccinations done and now he’s comfortable and happy living in our apartment and is probably about 4-5 months old.
The problem is, one roommate now thinks she has a cat allergy. I guess she had never experienced allergy symptoms before but now she is pretty sure she’s allergic to him. She wanted me to get him out of the apartment for a couple of weeks so she can see if she’s allergic but that’s really not an option + I don’t think the allergens would cease to exist that quickly if he was gone. I pushed her to get an allergy test done because that seems like the best way to figure it out, and she agreed to but wants me to give him away if she is allergic (she also mentioned me maybe keeping him in my room all the time which I vetoed for his quality of life).
The idea of parting with him is difficult to stomach, but is this the only option? it would be really difficult to move out at this point, and I don’t think she would move out either. I would hate to bring him to the shelter after all this, but we do have a good local shelter. I could also try to find someone to adopt him if I need to. I’m just not sure what the best path is at this point.
