Alright... I've been having this dilemma. My parents and I are building a small shed/barn/pet house in my backyard. It's 12ft by 12ft with a 4ft porch, that we will be fencing in and screening in, in the front, so 12ft by 16ft in all. The inside is 11ft 4in by 11ft 4in because of the insulation and stuff.
We originally started it for my bunnies because my parents got sick of them in the house, and I refused to let them be outside in just a hutch (I was worried for my babies). The back wall will be covered in shelving units that have been converted into a hutch. They come out about 5ft from the back wall.
The idea my mom and I had, is to get a sort of barn cat to make sure there are no bugs or mice or anything in the baby house. I got real excited before I realized that this house is pretty small, and a cat might not fit. There will be a loft, that will be specifically for the cat, a cat tree, and lots of toys.
I want to raise this cat in the barn house so she is nice to the bunnies and can help with the bugs and stuff. I'll probably bring her inside pretty often, if that is an issue. Also, she'll probably be my cat instead of a family cat, so I'd bring her along when I get my own house (Probably won't be for a while. I'm a year away from college, and want to go for a Doctorate).
I'm trying to figure out if this an ok plan. My other idea is to bring the cat outside to the pet barn every few days to help clean up.
If the cat would be happy in the baby barn, I'd like to keep her there and maybe bring her in everyday. Or maybe the opposite and keep her inside and take her out everyday.
Basically I've read a lot, and people say a room with lots of toys is better than a cage at a shelter or that you shouldn't get a cat if you can't give her the room to be a cat. I want her to be happy though, so what do you think?
Is this all just a dumb idea? Is some variation of this a decent plan? Ideas?
Also, I already have two family cats. They're both indoor cats (as in the actual house). They like walking outside on the deck in their harnesses. They both nap most of the day in around the same place and only play for about a half hour. Which is why I think it might work as long as she has some comfy beds and I bring her in to play. My biggest problem is trying to bring her in and out without feeling bad about downsizing her. I feel like I'll probably end up just letting her stay in the house, especially if she isn't happy. So... maybe I just try it and she if she likes it? But she probably wont like the small bedroom size shed after roaming the house. Or... I keep her in the baby house and she if she seems happy, let her stay in there.
I don't know. I need input. Please?
