Hello r/pets! Hoping you can give me advice on some new house issues:
tl;dr: Moved to a new house and, although she seemed fine at first, cat is getting aggressive and seems depressed. Taking her to vet to be safe, but other than that, what do?
I adopted my two-year old domestic tabby Hildegard from a shelter in April. She had no medical issues at the shelter and still hasn't had any. She had trouble getting adopted because she didn't like other cats and would get overstimulated, sometimes lashing out but mostly just not playing with people. They warned me that she might take some time to adjust at my apartment, but she got comfortable very quickly. I could tell she was excited to be in a home again.
I lived alone in a small apartment and she had free reign. The first few weeks she would try to jump on counters but scooping her up and putting her in another room worked. However, I received a job offer on very short notice and moved to a new city about three weeks ago. I live in a big house with two other people. One of them loves cats and is good with them, and Hildi will go cuddle with her sometimes when I'm not home. The other one is mildly allergic to cats so they just ignore each other, which has been fine so far.
The first few days I kept her in my room (her litterbox, food, and water are still in there.) Eventually, I started letting her out when I was in the common areas, and then when I was not home as well. She seemed happy and well-adjusted for a while, but then I went out of town for a weekend and since then she's been agressive (only to me thankfully), whining a lot, and eating more. I know these are signs of a cat being anxious/depressed. My roommate also said she's been more aloof and not interested in petting/cuddling. I work from home Friday-Monday, so I spent a lot of time with her then, but am gone a lot of the day Tuesday-Thursday. She bites me (not skin-breaking, but agressive nibbling) and has been purring sometimes with her tail twitching, which makes me think the purring is self-soothing.
I'm taking her to the vet next week to rule out anything medical, but do yall have any advice in case its just anxiety/depression? Should I keep letting her roam the house, or keep her in my more familiar room? What are the best toys I can get for her that she can play with on her own when I'm not home? Thank you!
