This week, I got a very sweet 3-year-old pitty from the shelter. She is very loving, but probably has some separation anxiety, and particularly prefers me over other people. We already have a vet appointment in a few days and will address it. But basically, she doesn’t want to leave my side, and if nobody else is around to keep her company, she will start whining as soon as she thinks I am gone - even if I have just closed the door to go to the bathroom. Even trying to move while she’s asleep, she immediately wakes up and follows me.
The bigger problem is that I also have a 3-month-old kitten, who is currently not a fan of our newest resident. I’m trying to keep them separated right now - the kitten has his food and litter box in one room, and access to another room for a little more space to roam without the dog terrorizing him. Unfortunately, the dog tries to follow me in every time I try to take care of food, water, litter, or just give my poor boy some snuggles. There’s been a lot of whining, and on a couple occasions she has been able to dart past me and corner the cat. She doesn’t attack, but she does bark when the cat (naturally) starts hissing and growling.
The people in my life so far haven’t been very helpful, so I could use some advice. How do I get them to start getting along and give my kitty the love he needs without making the separation anxiety worse??
