Hello everyone.
My mother, 55F has always been a really caring person, trying for everyone else but herself. She was working until she married, and since then she quit working (mutual decision with dad) to take care of our family. When me and my sister left home for our studies, she developed the rather common empty nest syndrome. She suffered some psychotic attacks, but she recovered and for about two years she was fine.
For the last year though, the following is happening: she is obsessed with dogs. We never had a pet and we would most probably never had a pet. It isn't that we don't love pets, but we think it is a great responsibility and I believe my father would be against it.
Now, my mother never had any particular interest in dogs. Never in her life. Until last year. She started watching funny dog videos, then moved to dog rescue videos, and now we are at a point that she spends almost her entire day in front of her cell phone or TV watching everything dog related. She lives with my dad, and me and my sister live in another cities. There is still no thoughts of actually having a dog.
I believe that this is a big red flag. My guts say that she develops these obsessions to fight loneliness and to feel that she is caring for someone, since she has no kids to take care now.
What I find difficult though, is to convince her to visit her psychiatrist again. It was easy to convince her, when she had a psychotic attack (loss of memory) but how can you tell someone that you should visit a psychiatrist because you are obsessed with dogs?
What I will do, is talk to her psychiatrist. But I would really like to hear your opinions on the matter, maybe any similar experiences or sth. Thanks really, I need this, I feel so sad for her.
