I recently adopted a shelter dog (unsure of the breed, they told me she’s a boxer mix). I need some help! She’s 3ish years old and not much is known about her history (she has scars though so was likely a stray or animal cruelty situation)
She’s super sweet and chill and I really have seen almost no aggression (see below). But does get random bursts of energy. Because of these random bursts of craziness I have decided that for now I don’t really want her on my couch because she will get playful and scratches the couch some (I would love to eventually let her on there to cuddle but for now I don’t trust her to not ruin the couch).
When I am already on the couch and she tries to get up there I push her off she sternly tell her no, but when I am not on the couch and she jumps up there and I try and tell her to get off she just growls at me and I get scared to push her off because the growling scares me and makes it hard to be more authoritative (I am a smallish female). This is the only time I’ve ever seen her be aggressive (I don’t think she’d bite me but I’m not going to risk it).
Also - I try and play with her to get her energy out but she doesn’t fetch and is scared of cars so we cant go on walks. We mostly play in the dog park at my apartment building, but she doesn’t play fetch so it’s hard to get her to run around there. Starting next week she’ll spend one day a week at the dog park.
Any tips to get her to listen to me more? Any tips to get her to get her energy out? Any other tips for a shelter dog transitioning to apartment living?
