Hi all, not sure if this is the best place to post this, so if anyone knows a sub that might be a better fit please let me know!
My family has been stuck watching a cat for an acquaintance. She has been leaving her cat with us on and off for about 3 years now. She had been keeping the cat at home by itself for at least a week, with food and water bowls everywhere, but no attention and no one to check in on it every day in case something went wrong. Well, when we found out about that we offered to watch the cat. The issue is that the time she’s away has been getting longer and longer. First it was a month, then 3 weeks later she left the cat with us again for 4 months. We’re currently on a stretch where the cat has spent 10/12 months with us, and we don’t foresee him returning to his owner until at least October. The owner won’t ever say when she’s coming back for the cat, and she doesn’t leave money to pay for the cat’s food and litter. She doesn’t text to check up on him.
The big issue is that the cat is chipped in her name. She’s mentally unstable and insists that she loves the cat, but she only sees him for 2 months out of the year max. We’d like to update his vaccines, integrate him into our house with the other cats, and just adopt him as our own. Obviously we can’t get any kind of procedure done if he’s not “ours” according to the chip, but he’s with us constantly with no end in sight.
How long until he’s considered abandoned? We have no interest in maintaining any relationship with this woman, so I’m not worried about hurting her feelings, but I don’t really see her easily signing over the cat to us so we can get the chip info changed.
Any advice would be appreciated!
Extra info: we live in SC, the cat is chipped in SC. His technical owner had an address here but lives in MD 10/12 months of the year. She could take the cat with her there but chooses not to.
